What Is LANAP?

LANAP stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, a newer treatment approved in 2004 for the correction of advanced cases of gum disease. LANAP is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive treatment that does not require cutting or sutures. It is a one-time procedure with a short recovery time.

If you are suffering from gum disease, prompt treatment is key to both your dental health and your overall well-being.

Dr. Guzman has been certified in the procedure and will help you determine the best treatment for your current periodontal condition.

Dental Partners of Boston is great. They fixed 50 years of mediocre dental work and my lack of braces as a child in short order. I recommend the practice without reservation. And their COVID preparations were fully over the top. I felt safe the entire time. No short cuts. Just great service and attention to detail.

The Dangers of Gum Disease

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, causes bleeding, receding gums, bone loss, and, if allowed to progress, tooth loss. In addition, infection and decay in your mouth can affect your entire body, contributing to heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and dementia.

Fortunately, there are many effective options for treating periodontal disease, including both conventional procedures and newer treatments. At Dental Partners of Boston, we are proud to be among the first dental practices to offer LANAP, the latest in gum disease treatment.

The traditional approach

As periodontal disease progresses, the periodontal pockets around each tooth deepen due to irritation and infection, causing the gums to separate from the teeth. This provides a safe harbor for even more bacteria right against the tooth root.

In the past, gum disease has been treated with periodontal flap surgery, with the aim of removing diseased tissue and calculus buildup to allow the gums to heal without interference from an infection. While this is an effective treatment, it has limitations, including the need to cut and suture the gum tissue. Cutting and suturing lead to slower recovery times and a longer overall process.

LANAP takes a different approach to remove disease tissue and calculus buildup using a specialized surgical laser.

How LANAP works

To complete the LANAP procedure, one of our trained and certified Boston periodontists uses a specialized PerioLase MVP-7 laser to remove infected gum surface tissue that has separated from the tooth roots. Our periodontist then removes calculus deposits from the exposed root surface with an ultrasonic scaler and ensures all bacteria are killed by a second pass with the laser.

Freed from infection, your healthy gum tissue can begin to heal and regenerate. The result is a healthy gumline and a much brighter prognosis for keeping your teeth for years to come.

Benefits of LANAP

In treating periodontal disease, LANAP provides options for saving teeth that otherwise would be lost. It offers several advantages over the traditional approach, including:

  • No cutting or stitches
  • Full-mouth treatment in one procedure
  • Short recovery time
  • More gum tissue is retained than in conventional gum surgery
  • Minimized long-term sensitivity
  • Promotion of bone regeneration without a graft
  • A high success rate for treating periodontal disease
  • Competitive price compared to alternatives

Laser periodontal treatment offers new hope for patients who thought their periodontal health was a lost cause. With this procedure, Dr. Guzman repairs gums and saves teeth other dentists would see only as a case for dentures.

The benefits of the procedure extend to anyone with advanced periodontal disease. Dr. Guzman at Dental Partners of Boston is among just a few periodontists trained to perform this innovative procedure.
