Healthy Gums Can Protect Your Heart—Stay Informed.

THE TERM GUM DISEASE probably sounds pretty familiar, especially if you’ve ever spent time at our practice. We make a special effort to inform our patients about the seriousness of gum disease, and the important role good oral hygiene plays for your overall health.

Swollen, red, and bleeding gums are all signs of an unhealthy mouth and gum disease. These conditions can cause discomfort, bad breath, and even tooth loss if not properly treated. Yesterday we posted an article on our Facebook Page that outlines the serious effects gum disease can have on our bodies. One quote from the article points out that “people with severe chronic gum disease, or periodontitis, are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease.” Bacteria from our mouths can also lead directly to clotting, further putting our hearts at risk. Another particularly memorable quote from the article states that “severe periodontal disease is the equivalent to a wound of about eight square inches…Imagine a wound that size on your skin, always ulcerated and exposed to a whole variety of bacteria.”

Gum disease is more serious that many people realize, which is why our doctors are specifically trained to notice the signs and treat them before it gets out of hand. We not only manage periodontal disease, we reverse it. Soft tissue grafts can be taken from the roof of your mouth to cover tooth roots, replace missing tissue from a receding gum line, and decrease sensitivity.

No matter what your condition may be, our trained Boston periodontists can create an effective outcome that will last.

Set up an appointment with us to find out more about how our periodontal team can help keep your gums disease-free! We promise you high-quality results and a gentle touch. Here at Dental Partners of Boston you will be in the best of hands.
